We are continuing our unit on algebra, working to isolate the variable in an algebraic equation. While that may sound like Greek, what we are actually doing is using what we know of inverse (opposite) operations to add, subtract, multiply or divide numbers so we can figure out what the variable equals in a given numerical sentence. To further help students (and parents!), I have included video links below:

In addition to this practice with algebra, please remember that students are still working to improve their ability to independently solve multi-step word problems. As part of our work, students are expected to submit one (1) completed word problem each Friday. The word problems for this week can be found at the end of this post. (Students receive a hard copy of each of these problems on Mondays.)
Refer to the checklist each student has in their Agenda (page 127) to help students check their work prior to turning in their word problem, please. In a nutshell, students are expected to (a) identify, circle and identify the start and changes in the problem (b) solve, showing their work and (c) write their result/answer in a complete sentence. Time is given at the beginning of class for students to work on their word problems; they may also choose to work on this task at home.
Lastly, please remember that the sixth grade Math teachers each have posted office hours; this is intended to provide additional support to students. Hours are available in the mornings (8a-8:45a) as well as in the afternoons (4:30p-5:15p).
